Bozeman Watermelon
( citrullus lanatus )

Developed in Bozeman Montana for short season growing areas, this light green watermelon has a speckled smooth skin. The slightly pear-shaped fruit are large for such an early melon, averaging 10-15 lbs with larger ones up to 18 lb. It has a very good flavor with a thick pink-red flesh, and with few seeds. Matures in only 80-90 days and keeps for up to a month after picking. The Bozeman watermelon is an excellent choice for northern gardeners and for commercial growers as a short season market melon.

Plant seeds directly in the soil 1/2 inch deep in hills spaced 2-3 feet apart after all danger of frost has passed. Thin to 2-3 plants per hill. Or start in pots 3-4 weeks before last spring frost for an even earlier harvest. Watermelons like well fertilized soil and lots of water during the hot summer months.
